“Unravelling the tasks underpinning legal judgment prediction in cases on the European Convention on Human Rights”

Abstract

A number of proposals have been made in the AI and law literature for how to undertake the task of determining the verdict in a legal case, what has come to be known as the ‘legal judgment prediction task’. In this talk I will argue that in order for the legal judgment prediction task to be undertaken effectively by an AI tool, a multitude of sub-tasks needs to be tackled, and using a variety of different AI techniques. I will present recent work undertaken to tackle some of these tasks using varied techniques covering symbolic AI, machine learning and generative AI approaches. The work will be demonstrated within the context of developing AI-based decision-support tools for processing cases in the European Court of Human Rights.
